14 A Photographic Conversation
This photographic conversation introduces to us the work of 14 new and talented New York based artists. From backgrounds as varied as the Philippines and Ohio these emerging talents use the photographic medium to reflect on a variety of inspirations while circling around a central theme of the photographic conversation.

Valeria Mafla gives us a fresh new take on abandoned buildings, while Nicole Martinez’s work is deeply personal exploring secrets revealed and what they might represent.

Ohio born Kyle Myer takes the viewer on a surreal journey of a world scene through the eyes of a television. In what the artist describes as a voyeuristic window we are invited to explore what a TV might see that others might not. Alan Raquel also uses the media as an influence. His photos are stills from an imaginary film done with a nod towards the film noir style.

Tamara C. Raczynsky, Jane Klein, and Neville Layne present work that chronicles the beauty in nature. Both artists seek to document the solace and serenity that is rare in New York’s urban chaos.

Columbian born Ruben Padilla seeks to freeze a moment in time. His photos illustrate the beauty of decay; something the artist believes most people miss as they hurry about their daily lives.

Eduardo Molina examines innocuous stains and patterns in our urban environment overlaying them with an insight into what his mind creates with them. Kenneth Huertas also is interested in the urban aesthetic. He marries his fine art background with digital imaging to blur the lines between painting and photography.

You Bin states that he wants to raise suspicion and ambiguity. He has created diptychs that examine social smiles. Are they politeness or a manipulative tool?

Joey Rodriguez shows a piece from his Not For Sale series. He takes the aesthetic of fashion photography and applies it to twelve pairs of shoes in varying stages of wear. Each shoes is representative of important parts of the artist’s life.

Gustavo Ureña documents the inadvertent creation of evocative urban collages, as varied people attempt to promote themselves using stickers and posters and placing them over existing signage, essentially using the signs as a makeshift canvas.

Stefi Sakata introduces experimental work using hand drawn illustrations and embroidery to create scenes infused with elements of adventure and mystery.

The show runs from May 15 th -17 th at Harlem’s Casa Frela Gallery. For more information email photoconversation@gmail.com or contact the Casa Frela gallery at 212 722 8577 or online at casafrela.com.
