Mapocak Exhibition of Patient Artwork
I have had the good fortune to be introduced to Mr. Lawrence Rodriguez, a Harlem Art Gallery owner and local philanthropist, who has agreed to host an exhibition of patient art work in his gallery on West 119th Street. Our first show is tentatively scheduled for early spring, and with success, there will be others to follow on a continuing basis.

This will be a wonderful opportunity for our patients to have their creative works shown in our local community and all proceeds from the sales will go directly to the artists.

Mr. Rodriguez has invited our staff to attend the show and explore the gallery where our patients' works will be shown. The gallery itself is a magnificently restored Stanford White brownstone in the Mount Morris Historic District. I encourage you to attend the event and introduce yourselves as MPC staff members. I look forward to establishing a mutually supportive relationship

Album: ART WORKS! PAINTINGS AND CERAMICS

"Art Works! Paintings and Ceramics", an exhibition of creative works by the patients of Manhattan Psychiatric Center.
April 1st and 2nd, 2006

The Manhattan Psychiatric Center, (MPC), has served the Harlem community for many years. Located on Wards Island, MPC's mission is to act as A Bridge to Recovery. We view our hospital as a place for recovery from illness, a step in a journey back to health. As we work toward the goal of returning our patients to their families, friends and communities, we provide opportunities and resources for them to express their individual and collaborative creativity.
The title "Art Works" was taken from an exhibition produced by Rehabilitation Service's Art Center in the October 1994. The Art Center's Open Studio program ran for nearly ten years in the late 1980's and early nineties. The Open Studio program allowed patients access to quality materials and art lessons while providing support from staff, who were art therapist as well as professional artists. Since 1988, Manhattan Psychiatric Center's resident artists have displayed and sold their creative works in public art shows in Soho, Tribeca, Albany and other Outsider Artist exhibitions. This current exhibition at the Casa Frela Gallery is reestablishing that tradition with a showing of new artistic works in addition to those works from the Open Studio's Archives. Casa Frela's display of "Art Works!" is reconnecting our resident artists with the community.
All proceeds from artistic sales will go to the artist.
